The TGEP Book Club
A monthly reading programme for people who want to stay with one book long enough to think about it.
The TGEP Book Club is the monthly reading programme of the TGEP Reading Room. We choose one book at a time and give it the attention that hurried reading often denies it.
The selection may come from The Good Earth Publishers or from another publishing house. What matters is not who published the book. What matters is whether it gives readers something worth carrying into a conversation.
There is no prescribed interpretation and no requirement to agree with the book, the author or other readers. The purpose is to read carefully, think independently and speak plainly.
The book is chosen by the club. The judgement remains with the reader.
The Old Man and the Sea
A short book about an old fisherman, a long struggle at sea, and a victory that does not arrive in the form he expected.

We chose The Old Man and the Sea because it asks a question that reaches far beyond fishing. What makes an effort worthwhile when the result may be lost?
Hemingway tells the story with extraordinary economy. There is very little decoration, yet almost every page leaves something for the reader to consider. It is an appropriate first selection for the TGEP Book Club: accessible, serious, short enough to be read without hurry, and large enough to produce disagreement.
Readers may buy, borrow or otherwise obtain the selected book wherever they normally find books. Participation in the Book Club does not require purchasing the title from TGEP.
Is the old man defeated at the end of the book, or has he proved that defeat is something different from loss?
Use any legitimate edition you prefer.
You do not need to buy the book from TGEP to take part in the Book Club. Readers may use a print edition, borrow a library copy, read an authorised eBook, or listen to an authorised audiobook of The Old Man and the Sea.
TGEP does not reproduce or distribute the selected book. The Book Club provides the reading selection, editorial note, reading question and conversation. The book itself should be obtained through the reader's preferred lawful source.
Availability, pricing and territorial access are determined by the bookseller, library or rights holder. TGEP does not receive payment from these links.

Readers will be invited to send a brief response after reading. Selected reflections may be considered for publication through the TGEP Readers’ Desk, with the reader's permission.
From time to time, a Book Club selection may also lead to an online reading conversation, an author discussion or a small reading evening. Any such event will be announced on this page.
