A book can travel beyond one edition, one format, one language and one country. This desk handles rights, permissions and licensing enquiries concerning works for which The Good Earth Publishers controls, represents or is authorised to administer the relevant rights.
One book can have many publishing lives.
Publication in one market or format does not necessarily exhaust every commercial possibility attached to a work. Translation, audio, territorial editions, excerpts, adaptations and other licensed uses may each require a separate grant of rights.
Copyright and publishing rights are not the same thing. Copyright concerns ownership of the protected work. A publishing or licensing agreement may give another party permission to exercise defined rights without transferring all copyright.
The controlling document is always the relevant contract together with the law that applies to it. TGEP confirms rights availability before discussing a licence.

Translation Rights
Permission to translate and publish a work in an agreed language, territory, format and term.

A useful rights enquiry needs more than “Is this available?”
Give us enough information to understand the proposed transaction. Missing territory, language, format or intended use usually delays a meaningful response.

Before you enquire
Short answers to the questions that most often affect the first stage of a rights discussion.
Does TGEP own every right in every book it publishes?
No assumption should be made. The relevant publishing agreement determines which rights, formats, languages and territories TGEP controls or is authorised to administer for a particular work.
Can I ask for translation rights?
Yes. Identify the title, proposed language, territory, publisher or organisation, intended format and publication plan. TGEP will first confirm whether the requested translation right is available.
Can I request film, television or stage rights?
Yes. Provide the work, adaptation format, production entity, territory and intended use. Availability and the correct contracting party must be established before substantive negotiation.
Do I need permission to quote from a TGEP book?
The answer depends on the material, amount used, purpose, jurisdiction and any applicable legal exception. Where permission is required, send the exact passage and details of the proposed use.
Does sending an enquiry reserve the right for me?
No. An enquiry does not create an option, licence, exclusivity, reservation or other contractual right. Any grant must be recorded in the appropriate written agreement.
I am an author. Where can I learn about rights before signing a contract?
Start with TGEP's Publishing Contracts Guide and Copyright Guide, then read the relevant royalty, translation and publishing-business material. Individual legal advice may be appropriate for a substantial transaction or dispute.
A book may begin with publication. Its rights may carry it much farther.
