The TGEP Reading Room
A place for people who still believe a book deserves time.
The TGEP Reading Room begins with a simple belief: books ought to be read together as well as alone.
Each reading period will place one carefully chosen book before our readers. It may be fiction, memoir, history, biography, poetry or another work that gives us something worth thinking about. It need not be a TGEP title. The purpose of this room is reading, not advertising.
We shall say why we chose the book, put one good question before the reader, and invite thoughtful responses in plain words.
But the purpose is larger than a monthly selection. TGEP wants to work towards creating more readers, protecting the habit of sustained reading, and connecting people who still believe that books deserve time. We hope to work with book clubs, libraries, schools, publishers, reading charities and independent reading communities in India and beyond.
We are publishers. But before that, we are readers.

We chose The Old Man and the Sea because it asks a question that reaches far beyond fishing. What makes an effort worthwhile when the result may be lost?
Hemingway tells the story with extraordinary economy. There is very little decoration, yet almost every page leaves something for the reader to consider. It is an appropriate first selection for the TGEP Book Club: accessible, serious, short enough to be read without hurry, and large enough to produce disagreement.
Read at your own pace. TGEP does not host or reproduce the book. Readers may use any legitimate print, library, eBook or audiobook edition. The Book Club page provides links to reading options.

This is not a showroom for our own books.
The Reading Room will include books from many writers and many publishing houses. A publisher who cares about reading must be willing to recommend a good book whether or not it appears on his own list.
From time to time, a TGEP title may be chosen. When that happens, it will enter the room on the same terms as every other book: readers remain free to admire it, question it, disagree with it, or find that it did not speak to them.
The room exists for the reader first.
We publish books. But this initiative begins with a different question: who will still be reading them?
The World of Reading is an initiative of The Good Earth Publishers devoted not simply to publishing more books, but to creating more readers. We want to work with reading communities across countries to encourage the habit of reading, introduce books across borders, and bring readers into conversation with one another.
The Reading Room is TGEP’s own place within that larger effort. It can remain small and serious while also opening its doors to other rooms: established book clubs, library groups, schools, colleges, reading charities, publishers and independent communities whose first interest is the reader.

TGEP and a partner reading community may choose one book together, carry the same central question through the month, and exchange selected reader responses afterwards.
Let readers meet readers.
Not every literary conversation needs to begin with an author. We would like ordinary readers in different cities and countries to speak with one another about what a book gave them, disturbed in them, or changed for them.
Create one new reader at a time.
From time to time, partner communities may encourage readers to lend, give or recommend a book to someone who does not regularly read. The measure is not copies sold. It is readers reached.
Bring reading communities to one table.
As the network grows, TGEP hopes to host occasional online conversations among readers, librarians, teachers, reading organisers and publishers around one question: how do we help more people become readers?
Who we would like to work with
We welcome contact from organisations and communities whose work is genuinely centred on reading. A collaboration need not be large. It may begin with two reading groups, one shared book and one honest conversation.
One Book · Two Reading Rooms
TGEP would like to begin with a modest cross-border pilot. Two reading communities choose the same book for one month. Both carry the same principal question. At the end of the reading period, a small group of readers from each side meets online. Selected reflections may then be shared through the Readers’ Desk and the partner community, with permission.
The selected book need not be published by TGEP. The purpose is to create a reading exchange, not a sales campaign.
Discuss a Reading CollaborationNo participating organisation will be expected to promote a TGEP title, and no reader will be required to buy a book from TGEP. We are interested in collaborations whose first purpose is reading itself.
A reading room should eventually become a meeting place.
As the community grows, TGEP intends to hold occasional online reading conversations, author discussions and small reading evenings. Schools, colleges, libraries, families, book clubs and independent readers may also be invited to take part in future reading initiatives.
We would especially like the Reading Room to connect with other reading communities rather than stand apart from them. A room without walls should be able to open into another room, another city and, eventually, another country.
The scale need not be large. Ten people reading the same book seriously can make a better conversation than ten thousand people merely seeing its cover.
