Shocking partner-murder cases deserve investigation, not a conclusion about all women.

The Gurdaspur case reported by ETV Bharat concerns a woman arrested over an alleged conspiracy to kill her boyfriend. An arrest does not establish guilt. The investigation and any subsequent court findings determine what can ultimately be stated as proved.

Repeated headlines can create the impression of a broad increase in women killing partners. That impression is not a statistical finding. Establishing a trend requires comparable crime data over time, consistent categories and attention to reporting changes. This edition does not claim that such an increase has been demonstrated.

The public-interest story is how relationships, coercion and alleged conspiracies can lead to violence in particular cases. Motives reported by police should be attributed to police. A careful reconstruction can be gripping without treating individual accused people as representatives of their gender.
