Truth and nonviolence are difficult principles precisely when they are most needed.

Gandhi Jayanti asks more of public life than an annual photograph. Truth requires a willingness to correct a claim that benefits one’s own side. Nonviolence requires restraint when anger is politically useful. Equality requires attention to people who receive little applause.

These principles do not remove disagreement. They offer a way to conduct it without making cruelty a measure of strength. On 2 October, a publication committed to truth should begin with its own habits. Verify the accusation, identify the source and allow a correction to be visible. The tribute becomes meaningful through practice.
