The names, the years and the careers that followed.

India’s Miss World winners include Reita Faria in 1966, Aishwarya Rai in 1994, Diana Hayden in 1997, Yukta Mookhey in 1999, Priyanka Chopra in 2000 and Manushi Chhillar in 2017. India’s Miss Universe winners include Sushmita Sen in 1994, Lara Dutta in 2000 and Harnaaz Sandhu in 2021.

These are different competitions, and their titles should not be used interchangeably. The more interesting follow-up asks how the women used the opportunities that followed. Medicine, acting, advocacy and public life reveal a wider story than a crown alone. This is a historical feature, not an announcement of the current titleholder.
