The TGEP Literary Network

Writing Residencies Around the World

A curated and searchable guide to residential programmes offering writers time, space, mentorship, community or financial support to advance literary work.

Last updated 15 July 2026

A residency should create the conditions in which serious work can happen.

Some programmes are fully funded, some offer partial financial assistance and others charge fees. TGEP distinguishes these models so writers can compare eligibility, duration, costs, support and application routes before committing.

Types of writing residencies

The most suitable programme depends on the writer’s stage, project, financial position and preferred balance between solitude and community.

Fully Funded Residencies

Accommodation and core programme costs are covered. Some programmes also provide meals, travel assistance or a stipend.

Supported or Part-Funded Residencies

A portion of the programme cost may be covered through scholarships, bursaries or financial aid, while the resident pays the remainder.

Fee-Based Retreats and Residencies

Writers pay for accommodation, facilities or programme participation. These should be evaluated as purchased professional or retreat services.

How to evaluate a writing residency

A beautiful location is not enough. Consider the practical and literary conditions under which you will actually work.

Understand the full cost

Check accommodation, meals, travel, visa, insurance, local transport, application fees, deposits and whether a stipend is included.

Study the working model

Determine whether the programme is self-directed, mentored, workshop-based, community-oriented or designed mainly as a private retreat.

Confirm the expected outcome

Some residencies require readings, workshops, public engagement or project reports. Others protect uninterrupted private working time.

Common residency application materials

Requirements differ by programme. Prepare only the documents requested by the current official call.

Project statement or residency proposal
Writing or translation sample
Professional biography or curriculum vitae
Publication history
Statement of purpose
Preferred residency dates
References or letters of recommendation
Language, travel or access requirements

Residency scams and misleading offers

Verify every programme through its official domain. Be cautious of guaranteed selection, urgent payment demands, unofficial email addresses, hidden fees, vague accommodation details, requests for banking passwords or programmes that cannot identify their location, organisers, selection process or previous residents.
